5 Soulful Ways to Begin a Creative Practice

Beginning can feel like the hardest part.

Whether you’re returning to your creativity after a long pause or standing on the edge of something entirely new, it’s easy to get stuck in the swirl of “Where do I start?” and “What if I get it wrong?”

I’ve been there, too. More than once.

But here’s what I’ve learned: you don’t need a grand plan, the perfect supplies, or hours of free time to begin. You just need a way in. A gentle doorway. A little spark.

So today, I’m sharing five soulful ways to begin a creative practice—ways that honor your rhythms, your story, and your becoming.

Begin with a Tiny Ritual

Light a candle. Brew a favorite tea. Take three slow breaths. Let yourself arrive—not just physically, but emotionally, spiritually. This act alone can become the threshold between the outside world and your inner landscape.

Try: Lighting a candle and saying aloud, “This time is for me.”

Start with Curiosity, Not Expectation

Forget masterpiece thinking. Let your practice begin with “What if?” What if I follow this color? What if I let my pen wander? What if I make something just for me?

Try: Scribbling with crayons. Painting with your fingers. Writing a letter to yourself.

Curiosity opens the door that perfectionism keeps locked.

Choose a Form That Feels Natural

Don’t force yourself into someone else’s version of creativity. If words come easier than drawings, write. If images come before language, collage. If movement feels more alive than sitting still, dance.

Your practice is allowed to look like you.

Use Prompts as Invitations, Not Assignments

Prompts are wonderful allies—but they’re not homework. Let them stir something, not dictate it. You can respond in a sentence, a sketch, a color, or a breath.

Try this one: What is longing to come through me today?

Let the Practice Be Enough

You showed up. You created. You connected. That is the practice. There’s no need to publish it, perfect it, or prove it. The creative act itself is what nourishes.

Close your journal. Smile at the mess. Let it be sacred because it happened.

Beginning isn’t about waiting until you feel ready. It’s about saying: I’m willing to begin before I feel certain.

Even if it’s ten minutes. Even if it’s messy. Even if it’s quiet and hidden and yours alone.

Because the truth is, your creative practice isn’t just about making art.
It’s about making space for yourself.
